How Kolkata Celebrate Christmas


Kolkata, "The City of Joy" of India is one of those cities, where festivals are not celebrated according to their religions. The people of Bengal equally celebrate all of the festivals like-Durga Puja or Eid or Christmas.No Indian city celebrates Christmas with as much joy as Kolkata. The whole city is decorated with beautiful lights. The spirit is wonderfully genuine as thousands of people gather in the road just to look at them.

It is a long custom to bake their own cakes in Christmas for Bengalis. And if you are not expert in that, you can buy from the bakeries and stationary shops. All the park and roadside bushes are trimmed like Christmas trees. Kolkata in Christmas is the perfect example of secularism in India.

One of the main attraction in Kolkata during Christmas Day is "St. Paul's Cathedral". It is the largest cathedral in Kolkata. It was destroyed in the earthquake back in 1934 and restored there after. The huge and magnificent St. Paul Cathedral is jam packed for the midnight mass. From all faith of people gather here to rejoice the birth of Christ. And the whole ceremony is telecast in "Doordarshan Bangla".

Taking a walk through the whole "Park Street" area and the midnight St. Paul Cathedral will give you the feeling of London. It is year's one of the perfect night out time. And if you want to have a dinner in any of the restaurant, you have to book the seat many days before Christmas. People gathering in the roadside, walking through the street with Santa cap or jacket will give you the feeling of perfect Christmas.

When the name Kolkata comes in anyone's mind, first thing you see is food. The love for food of the people here is awesome. In the Christmas Eve, all the clubs, restaurants serve their the best foods. Road side party, functions and games are all part of the celebrations. The annual Christmas festival in Kolkata with around 30 food stalls is the talk of the town.
