In the year of 1770, Bihar experienced severe drought which caused the food crisis all over the state. To avoid such crisis in future, it was built by the East India Company's Bengal Army in request of Warren Hastings. Though the main purpose of this huge structure was to store grains in huge quantity, but perhaps it was never put to this noble purpose and it was never been filled to its maximum capacity.

Consisting of 145 steps of spiral stairways around this monument, which offers you to reach to the top of it and get a magnificent breathtaking view of the city and the river Ganges flowing nearby. The spiral twisting staircases were built to make ease for the coolies to carry the grain full of bags to the top.
