During the British Empire rule in India, they built many monuments all over the country. It still showcases some of the unbelievable work of artistic wonder created in 17th to 18th century. Monuments like Cellular Jail in Port Blair, Gateway of India in Mumbai, Red Fort in Delhi, Victoria Memorial in Kolkata and many more still carrying the fine engineering and architectural work from 17th century; which became famous tourists places for Indians and foreigners.
History
"Golghar" is such one of the most outstanding architectural creation of the British India. Golghar (Round House) is a large granary which symbolizes the identity of Patna, Bihar. It was built in the year of 1786. Captain John Garstin, employed by the East India Company. He gave the conception of the structure to build such architecture.
In the year of 1770, Bihar experienced severe drought which caused the food crisis all over the state. To avoid such crisis in future, it was built by the East India Company's Bengal Army in request of Warren Hastings. Though the main purpose of this huge structure was to store grains in huge quantity, but perhaps it was never put to this noble purpose and it was never been filled to its maximum capacity.
Structure
Located to the west of the Gandhi Maidan in Patna, the capital of Bihar State, India; it looks like gigantic Easter Egg. Consisting of 145 steps of spiral stairways around this monument, which offers you to reach to the top of it and get a magnificent breathtaking view of the city and the river Ganges flowing nearby. The spiral twisting staircases were built to make ease for the coolies to carry the grain full of bags to the top.
The structure was inspired by the native Stupa Architecture of the ancient India. Having a width of 125 m and almost 29 m height it doesn't have any kind of pillars. As the doors of the Golghar was designed to open inwards, it was never filled to its maximum capacity. However, there is door which opens outwards allow visitors to enter inside.
Other than climbing to the top of the Golghar and and enjoying the view from the top, you can take a pleasant walk inside premises. You can enjoy the beauty of the Golghar and the greenery inside sitting in the gallery.
Though entry fee here is free, but if you want to enjoy the "Laser Show" of some Indian Pre History, you have to buy a ticket. It remains open every day from morning to 7 pm.
